Biological nutrient removal

Companies and municipalities have to remove nutrients from their effluents - such as nitrogen and phosphate - before they can reuse, recycle or discharge the water. Biological nutrient removal is much more sustainable than chemical nutrient removal. And with Paques systems, they are more cost-effective as well.

Paques provides cost-effective biotechnology to meet strict discharge limits or to enable water reuse and water recycling.

ANAMMOX®:
Biological nutrient removal that requires 60% less energy

Typically, 15-25% of the total nitrogen load of a municipal wastewater treatment plant derives from the reject water. If the final effluent exceeds nitrogen limits, plant managers can increase the nitrogen removal capacity, ór treat the reject water that comes from sludge digestion. ANAMMOX®, a Paques method for denitrification in wastewater treatment, does the latter. It removes ammonium nitrate without the use of an external carbon source such as methanol, and thus requires 60% less energy than conventional denitrification in wastewater treatment. It also gives the option to fully use the BOD for the production of biogas or to recover phosphate. For this, several biological processes are combined in one tailor-made Paques system.

CIRCOX®:
Highly efficient biological nutrient removal from anaerobic effluent

Effluent from anaerobic reactors still contains low levels of BOD and possibly ammonia and phosphate. The CIRCOX® bioreactor is a very efficient aerobic system for the treatment of anaerobic effluents. It uses biofilm on a carrier material in an airlift reactor for biological nutrient removal. This compact system is a fully closed aerobic system with outstanding purification performance, as the purified effluent can be directly discharged to surface water.

ASTRASAND:
Compact effluent polishing

To raise the effluent quality of (municipal) wastewater treatment plants, a treatment stage can be added for biological nutrient removal. The ASTRASAND® continuous sand filtration technology combines the denitrification of wastewater and the removal of other components in a single filter. It reduces concentrations of nitrogen, phosphate, nitrate, ammonia, BOD, phosphate and TSS. STRASAND® removes total nitrogen to levels below 2 mg/l and total phosphate to 0.15 mg/l. The ASTRASAND filter operates under a constant backwash mode, continuously cleaning the filter bed. This self-cleaning, continuous process allows for consistently high filtrate quality.
