Because of our extensive expertise on sugar processing and ethanol production effluents, more than 100 sugar processors and distilleries rely on Paques for cost-effective distillery water treatment & sugar industry wastewater treatment.
Water management in sugar & ethanol production
Sustainable water management practices are crucial to ensure the long-term viability of Sugar & Ethanol production while minimizing its ecological footprint, because water is vital to the Sugar & Ethanol production process. In sugar production, water is used extensively in irrigating sugarcane fields, washing and extracting juice from the harvested cane, and in subsequent refining and crystallization stages. Similarly, in ethanol production from sugarcane, water is essential for fermentation, where yeast converts sugars into ethanol, and in distillation processes to separate ethanol from water.
However, the significant challenge lies in managing water resources sustainably to avoid straining local water supplies and the impact on water quality due to the discharge of processing effluents. Addressing these challenges requires implementing efficient irrigation practices, optimizing water use in processing plants through recycling and reuse, and adopting advanced wastewater treatment technologies to minimize environmental impact. Paques’ biotechnologies revitalize resources and make distillery water treatment & sugar industry wastewater treatment much more sustainable.
Biotechnology for all kinds of sugar & ethanol effluents
Sugar industry wastewater treatment is full of variables. The substrates vary from beet to sugarcane, from wheat to cassava or agave. Likewise, the end product can be sugar, ethanol and a variety of spirits. There are also multiple effluents from sugar & ethanol production: condensates, thin stillage, vinasse and conventional wastewater from the production process.
Due to our worldwide presence and more than 100 references in distillery water treatment & sugar industry, Paques has broad experience with a wide variety of distillery effluents. These include evaporator condensates, thin stillage (grain and/or fruit as feedstock) and sugar cane vinasses.
Solutions for distillery water treatment:
Biological treatment of vinasse effluent
The two most efficient processes for treating vinasse effluent, which typically contains 45,000–50,000 mg/L of COD, are:
First, separate the solids from the vinasse using a centrifuge. This reduces the solids content, leaving a liquid vinasse stream with less than 500 mg/L of suspended solids. Treat this liquid fraction in a BIOPAQ® ICX reactor, specifically designed for high volumetric loading rates. The separated solids are then mixed with filter cake and treated in a BIOPAQ® CBD reactor, which is optimized for effluents with high solids concentrations. These two technologies operate in parallel: one tailored for effluents with low solids concentrations and the other for high solids concentrations, ensuring maximum biogas production. Jose Cuervo and Patron Tequila already use this process to treat 100 tons of tequila vinasse per day in Mexico.
Alternatively, treat the vinasse directly in our next-generation BIOPAQ® UASBplus reactor, which is designed for high COD. The effluent and separated solids (mixed with filter cake) are then processed in the innovative clean bottom digester BIOPAQ® CBD.
