BIOPAQ® RISE is an advanced auxiliary module designed to enhance the performance of anaerobic wastewater treatment systems by enabling higher loading rates through additional granule retention. What is so special about BIOPAQ RISE?
This external biomass separator has a unique, space-saving design. The external separators are stacked inside a standpipe, which allows for easy cleaning and easy integration into any existing setup. BIOPAQ® RISE thus upgrades bioreactor performance without requiring significant additional space or maintenance.
BIOPAQ® RISE ensures efficient three phase separation to effectively separate biogas, liquid, and solids, optimizing granule retention and biogas production. The external standpipe captures granules from the effluent and redirects them into the reactor, maintaining biomass levels and reactor efficiency.

Granule retention is a critical factor in the efficiency and longevity of anaerobic wastewater treatment systems. In older anaerobic reactors (e.g. UASB reactors and EGSB reactors), the internal biomass separator does not retain all granules anymore. This leads to biomass wash-out – especially under the circumstances of high hydraulic loading in wastewater treatment, high organic loading in wastewater, and fluctuating wastewater inflows.
Retaining high concentrations of active microorganisms (granular sludge) is however crucial for maintaining high treatment efficiency, as these systems rely on stable microbial populations.
