The BIOPAQ® IC process explained
Industrial waste water enters the reactor and is mixed with granular anaerobic biomass in the distribution system. Organic compounds are converted into methane (biogas). Biogas is collected in the lower phase separator generating a “gas-lift.” Together with biogas, liquid flows upwards in the riser. Biogas leaves the reactor in the liquid/gas separator. Water returns through the downer into the distribution system, hence the name: Internal Circulation. Effluent is polished in the second, upper compartment. Biogas from the second compartment is collected in the upper phase separator. Treated effluent exits the reactor, and biogas is collected from the reactor.

BIOPAQ® IC is capable of handling COD loads at a 10x higher rate, and requires 10x less space than traditional UASB reactors, including BIOPAQ® UASB.
ith the development of UASB (Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket) reactor in the 80's, and BIOPAQ IC (Internal Circulation) reactor in the 90's, Paques stood at the forefront of modern anaerobic wastewater treatment.
