BioBizzHub the Netherlands

Bio Bizz Hub,
where biobased and water technologies move from pilot to practice

The Biobizzhub in Balk, the Netherlands, is an open innovation environment for organisations that want to turn proven ideas into full-scale solutions.
Here, R&D partners, start-ups and investors work side by side to develop, test and scale biobased and water technologies that answer real industrial needs.

Close the gap between innovation and market.
Partner with the Biobizzhub

Many promising technologies reach pilot scale but never make it to the market.
Often, organisations lack access to:

  • Industrial-scale test facilities
  • Relevant waste and water streams
  • Engineering and operational expertise
  • A network of industrial off-takers and investors
The Biobizzhub was created to bridge exactly this gap. It provides a physical testbed, shared infrastructure and structured support to help you validate, scale and de-risk new technologies before full commercial roll-out. Talk to our team about your R&D or scale-up challenge.

Located in Balk, in the heart of the northern Dutch water technology cluster, the Biobizzhub provides a combination of physical facilities and expertise.

Modern facilities for real-life testing

  • Laboratories for analytical work and small-scale experiments
  • Pilot and demo hall for upscaling to industrially relevant volumes
  • Workshop for building, adapting and maintaining pilot installations
  • Office and meeting spaces for project teams and partner sessions
  • Outdoor demo area for showcasing technologies in development
The site is designed to host approximately 8–12 start-ups and scale-ups at any given time, creating a compact but active innovation community.

Embedded in an industrial environment

The Biobizzhub is situated on the Paques site, giving companies access to:

  • Running industrial processes and utilities
  • Practical know-how on operating biological water and gas treatment systems
  • Direct feedback from engineers who work daily with full-scale installations (GEAR)
  • Outdoor demo area for showcasing technologies in development
This setting allows you to test not only if a technology works, but also how it behaves under realistic conditions.

Technical and business support

Depending on your needs, the Biobizzhub team can support you with:

  • Process design and upscaling strategy
  • Pilot design, construction and commissioning
  • Monitoring, sampling and data interpretation
  • Safety, permitting and compliance guidance
  • Business development support and connection to potential customers
Support is tailored per project, so you keep control over your technology and business model while benefiting from practical experience.

Powered by Paques.
Connected to a global network

The Biobizzhub was initiated by Paques, a Dutch company with decades of experience in biological wastewater treatment and biogas solutions, and strong ties to the WaterCampus in Leeuwarden.
For you as a partner or tenant, this means:

  • Access to an international network of industrial clients in sectors such as food and beverage, pulp and paper and chemicals
  • Exposure to real-world process challenges where new technologies can be applied
  • The opportunity to align research and pilots with market demand from day one

The Biobizzhub operates as an open innovation environment. The focus is on collaboration, knowledge exchange and building complementary solutions around shared challenges in the bio-economy.

One of the companies supported by the Biobizzhub is Recell, a start-up recovering cellulose from residual streams to produce sustainable raw materials. In collaboration with the hub, the company moved from a pilot installation of around 1,000 litres to a much larger reactor system, enabling significant scale-up of its process. This kind of trajectory shows how access to facilities, expertise and networks can accelerate the path from concept to independent operation.

The Biobizzhub can support different types of collaboration in the Netherlands. Details of each collaboration are tailored, with careful attention to IP, confidentiality and risk sharing.

For R&D and innovation partners

  • Joint development programmes and pilot projects
  • Long-term testing of specific process concepts or components
  • Strategic partnerships to develop new value chains in the bio-economy

For start-ups and tenants

  • Use of lab and pilot infrastructure under clear agreements
  • Short-term pilots or multi-year programmes with phased milestones
  • Community interaction with other innovators on site

For public authorities and investors

  • Co-development of regional innovation projects
  • Support in building demonstration capacity for policy and funding programmes
  • A visible, operational facility that anchors innovation in the region
