Paques BIOCYCLONE delivers superior sand and grit removal for manure digesters. Unlike hydrocyclones, the Paques BIOCYCLONE design offers controlled solid discharge and optimized underflow, ensuring thicker inorganic solids (such as sand and grit) discharge with minimal volatile solids loss. This means increased biogas output and reduced maintenance costs.

Similar to the Paques BIOCYCLONE Hydrocyclones use centrifugal force, however they typically lack control of the high and low solids discharge flows. As a result, they can discharge thinner solids and higher reject flow rates. Paques BIOCYCLONE uses proprietary internals plus a discharge valve to control separation, reduce grit accumulation, and prevent costly downtime.

Let’s connect for a short farm assessment to estimate set-up time and retrofit scope.

Avoid expensive manure digester cleanouts with Paques BIOCYCLONE

Sand and inert buildup reduces effective manure digester volume. Therefore, performance and gas output can suffer over time. This buildup also accelerates wear on pumps and downstream equipment, which usually increases unplanned maintenance.

Further, manure digester cleanouts are messy, highly disruptive and expensive. Manure digester sand challenges could add-up to a cost of $90,000–$150,000 for a cleanout and up to two weeks of downtime to complete, before considering ramp-up impacts and lost production. Even after primary separation, a meaningful share of sand can remain and still accumulate.

Key features
  • Controlled solids discharge for optimized separation
  • Thickened underflow discharge, 40–60% TS (pilot result)
  • Minimal volatile solids loss to maximize methane potential
  • Proprietary internals for stable performance on digestate
  • Tested and engineered for sand & grit removal for manure digesters on North American farms
  • Rapid payback where cleanouts and wear costs are recurring

What makes Paques BIOCYCLONE different from a generic hydrocyclone?

Both technologies rely on centrifugal separation. The difference with Paques BIOCYCLONE is control.

Generic hydrocyclones, common constraint
  • Many cyclone setups are designed to discharge freely, which limits how precisely you can manage underflow behavior.
  • Feed variability can then translate into variability in wasting rate and solids concentration.
  • Requires dilution water to reduce the feed solids concentration for effective sand removal.
Paques BIOCYCLONE, is engineered for digestate reality
Paques BIOCYCLONE adds controlled solid discharge and optimized underflow discharge, using:
  • Cycled discharge valve
  • Proprietary internals for stable separation
  • VFD and timed discharge to tune wasting rate and dry material content
As a result, you can target heavy inerts while retaining the organics that drive methane production.

Stop paying for sand cleanouts as “normal”.

Contact our experts for a free short assessment and learn how quickly Paques BIOCYCLONE™ could be set up on your site.

In a short online assessment, we will:
  • Map where grit enters, and where it settles
  • Estimate set-up scope and installation approach for your layout Quantify cleanout avoidance, downtime reduction, and wear-related savings
  • Compare Paques BIOCYCLONE vs generic hydrocyclones and larger grit packages

Pilot-proven outcomes:
Dairy RNG Project

Case Study, Paques field data
(installed Fall 2024, operating 12+ months):

  • 15,000 milking cows
  • 9M gal CSTR manure digesters, ~15-day HRT
  • Feed at 8.1–8.5% TS
  • Prior third-party de-sanding cost: $1.2M/year
  • Installed as a sidestream “tank dialysis” unit
  • Simple payback: <5 months (capital + installation, with minimal operating cost)

Performance data (pilot)
  • Sand removal: ~1 ton/day
  • Flow rate: 400 GPM
  • Average feed: 8.1% TS, clarified output 7.9% TS
Only a 0.2% TS drop. Grit out, organics stay.
  • Waste grit: 40–60% TS, with minimal VS loss
  • Estimated 95–98% removal of incoming inerts in the sidestream

This short video shows Paques BIOCYCLONE™ running in a sidestream “dialysis” loop at a dairy manure RNG facility.

Before vs after (pilot)

Before Paques BIOCYCLONE With Paques BIOCYCLONE
  • 6–8 ft sand buildup
  • Fiber plugging and frequent interruptions
  • Up to 2 weeks downtime per cleaning, plus lost biogas revenue
  • Cleanings reduced from 4 to 1 per month
  • Estimated savings $90K–$150K per month
  • Reduced wear on downstream equipment, improved digester stability

*Note: Results are site-specific. Your assessment will quantify expected performance and ROI for your feedstock and layout.

Paques BIOCYCLONE is designed for fast retrofits and low operational burden

Paques BIOCYCLONE is typically installed externally, on a sidestream “dialysis” loop. Therefore, you avoid rebuilding headworks or re-routing the full influent stream.

It’s built for operational simplicity:

  • Low instrumentation and control complexity
  • Minimal moving parts, fewer wear points
  • Adjustable settings for seasonal and feed variability
  • Fully skidded equipment, including controls

Where Paques BIOCYCLONE fits best

Best fit Also suitable
  • Dairy RNG manure digesters with sand bedding
  • Poultry manure digesters/litter applications for grit removal
  • Food Waste Digesters with Grit
  • Manure digester operators, owners, and developers managing cleanout frequency
  • Sites where upstream interception is difficult, for example flushed manure systems
  • Stillage and ethanol applications
  • Plug flow reactors, CSTRs, lagoons
  • Struvite, grit, or general inert buildup challenges

Grit not only reduces capacity, but also blocks lines and abrades pumps and tanks, and can reduce effective volume over time. In biogas and slurry handling guidance, grit and sand are also linked to abrasion across piping, pumps, and valves.
